Rajasthan Rampage – Land of Kings Land of Adventure
Rajasthan is a very special place for us at Nevermind. For us Rajasthan is the land of inspiration, land of adventure and the land of fun. It is the far western deserts of Rajasthan that we create our leather products as well as where we started running our Royal Enfield motorcycle adventures. Nowhere in the world inspires the imagination like Rajasthan will and centuries of world famous travellers, traders, adventures and warriors are testament to this. Rajasthan has one of the richest histories known to mankind with Moghul, the mighty Rajput’s and the British empires all claiming a stake at some point in history. The inhabitants of southern Rajasthan claim to be descendants of Alexander the Greats armies and the gypsies of Europe originate from Rajasthan. This is a small place with a big influence on global events! Rajasthan continues to influence modern history and western culture – Rudyard Kipling lived here and wrote the Jungle book and James Bonds Octopussy was filmed here.
Rajasthan is located in the north west of India on the far western borders. It is the largest state of India by has a relatively small but diverse population. The unity and friendliness of the locals will smack you in the face immediately. Everybody is smiling and laughing and seems to be enjoying life despite the trials and tribulations faced on an everyday basis. People seem to care for one another, friend, family or stranger, it does not matter here, someone will come to your aid.
We often refer to Rajasthan as the cultural heartland of India as it is the one place in India where one can still experience the awesomeness of India. From lonely desert tribes to wealthy descendants of the Rajput’s this state has it all. Music, costume, colour and dance rule in Rajasthan and sometimes you just need to pinch yourself to check that you are not dreaming.
The food of Rajasthan is a standout among our rides. Don’t be fooled by the semi-arid climate, lack of water and fresh vegetables. The Rajasthanis have overcome all of these challenges to create one of the world finest, tastiest and most nutritious cuisines. Our daily lunch stops have been discovered over the years to showcase the best of the best locally and freshly prepared foods. The décor may not always reflect this but believe us, the food is mouth-watering and prepared with love. In Rajasthan guest is god. Traditional meals to look out for are the Dal Bhati and for the meat lovers lamb Lal Maas. Oh, and the authors favourite snack in all of India – Aloo Tikki, best cooked up at a roadside stall in the far west Thar Desert and washed down with a cold Kingfisher Lager!
One of the strangest sports of Rajasthan is Ahor’s Stone festival, where two teams of 20 local men get extremely intoxicated and have to prevent the opponents from reaching the other end of the field by throwing large rocks at them. This sport was famously banned a few years ago due to the number of incapacitated players, fatalities, maimings and serious injuries.
Nevermind has so many stories here and over the past decade have travelled to every corner of this amazing state to find the best of the best. Places no tourist has ever seen before, places that will make you feel like the first human to travel here. You will taste the finest local foods, listen to the locals sing and dance along with them. You will stay in ancient palaces and ride ancient trade routes.
The best time to visit is October (warmer) and November/February (a little cooler). The ride is suitable for all riding abilities and experience however there are some small sections (generally 10 metres or less) of soft sand crossings when the dunes migrate across some tracks. We will always have support riders available to assist less confident riders.
